What Is Venmo and Why Is It Better Than PayPal?

If you want to send someone money quickly, you have many choices. But the two most popular services more people use than any other is PayPal and Venmo.

The main purpose of both is the same: to get money out of your bank account into someone else’s (or the other way around). However, the process of doing so is slightly different between Venmo and PayPal.

Even if you already know everything there is to know about PayPal, you may be wondering: What is Venmo, and is it a better option than PayPal?

What Is Venmo?

Venmo lets you send someone money instantly using either a credit card, a debit card, or your bank account. Many people don’t realize that PayPal actually owns Venmo. Venmo is essentially a simpler, alternative payment service offered by the same company.

Adding Payment Details

Once you sign up for a Venmo account, you’ll just need to add payment methods to start sending or receiving money. You’ll find this in the app menu under Payment Methods.

Just select Add bank or card and fill out the account details in the payment method form.

Once you have a payment added, you’re ready to start using the app.

Sending or Requesting Payments

From the main app screen you can tap the blue Send Payment icon to create a new payment to someone, or request a payment.

The other user will need a Venmo account so that you can search for their name or Venmo user ID to send payment.

You’ll simply need to:

  1. Select the user you want to send money to
  2. Enter the amount
  3. Enter the reason you’re sending the money (optional)
  4. Set the privacy of the transaction (Prive, Friends, or Public)
  5. Select Pay (or Request) to request the amount from that person

You’ll see this transaction appear on the main page of the app. You can tap that transaction at any time in the history to view the payment details.

Transfer Money to Your Bank Account

Whenever someone sends you money, you’ll see that appear in your Venmo balance. At any time you like you can tap the Transfer Balance link at the top of the menu to transfer money to your bank account or credit card.

The Transfer Balance page will show your full balance available to transfer. You can do an instant transfer to your bank or credit card for a 1% fee, or allow it to take up to three days with no fee.

Get a Venmo Debit Card

You might have already heard about the Paypal debit card, which lets you access your Paypal funds instantly for payments at any offline or online store.

Now Venmo offers the same feature: the Venmo debit card.

You can sign up for one by tapping Venmo Card in the app menu.

Just work through the wizard to sign up. You can choose from 4 basic colors. It’s a Mastercard debit card so works at mostly any business. It is also a Rewards card so you can earn points every time you use it – and there’s no credit check or monthly fees associated with it.

Venmo vs. Paypal: What Are the Differences?

You may have noticed that Venmo and Paypal have a lot in common. Other than a very different user interface, the two services are very similar.

One of the main differences is Venmo is almost like a payment service and social network combined into one. You can add friends on the service, which makes it more convenient to send or receive payments from them later.

Fees and Charges

There are a number of other differences, some slight and others significant. For example, here are the differences in fees.

  • Venmo charges 3% for credit card payments; PayPal charges 2.9% plus a $0.30 fixed charge.
  • No fees for bank transfers with either service.
  • No fee for debit card payments with Venmo; Paypal charges 2.9% plus a $0.30 fixed charge.
  • Venmo has a transaction limit of $4,999.99; Paypal only limits transactions at $10,000.
  • Withdrawing money to your bank is faster with Venmo, which only takes 1-3 days. Paypal withdrawals can take from 3-5 days.

Which Is More Accessible?

You can access both services on the same platforms, including the mobile app, or both the mobile or desktop browsers. There is one big difference you’ll notice when you visit Venmo on a browser and log into your account.

You won’t see a Send or Request blue button on the lower right corner like you do in the app. This is because with Venmo, you can only send or request payments using the mobile app.

You can still use the website to review your transaction history, update settings, or request a transfer to your bank account or credit card.

Also, Venmo is only available for use within the United States. On the other hand PayPal is available to people in over 200 countries.

Paypal is also more commonly accepted across many online and offline businesses.

Venmo being much newer, is still getting a foothold.

Being able to pay for things directly in stores using these services means you don’t have to transfer money to your bank account before you can buy things with your balance.

Sending Money to People

Without a doubt, the process of sending money to people with Venmo is much simpler and more streamlined. Using the Venmo app, it’s really just a quick three step process without any confusing options or other choices.

If the user has a Venmo account, you type the amount, a reason (if you want), whether to share the transaction publicly, and you’re done. Your user will have to pay a fee for receiving the money but Venmo doesn’t bother you with those details.

Paypal, on the other hand, has Send, Request, Crypto, and More buttons on the main page, mixed among all kinds of other information cluttered around the main dashboard. It’s also not very easy to find the link to transfer money to your bank or credit card.

And once you do select Send, the process isn’t a simple form. It’s a step by step wizard that changes the next options depending on your choices and who you’re sending money to.

The first step of the wizard looks simple enough.

But then after you select Continue, you’ll see details of the transaction that apparently you can change, like currency, whether you’re Sending to a friend, and what account you’re sending with.

If you choose to change the account, you’ll see you can use your Paypal account or send directly from your bank account.

Why are there so many choices with Paypal while Venmo is such an easy 3-step process?

It’s because Paypal has layered in more complicated fee structures depending on whether payments are international, and what is being paid for.

For example if you’re sending money to a friend you can choose to pay the fee or have the recipient pay it. Or you can choose to pay for goods or services, in which case the recipient has to pay the fee and have it covered by Paypal Purchase Protection.

So, on the one hand, Paypal may offer more features and choices. But Venmo simplifies the entire transaction process by standardizing fees and other details, letting you finish the payment process in just a few, simple clicks.

Other Considerations

A few other important differences to take into account before you make your choice between Venmo vs. Paypal:

  • Paypal offers Buyer Protection peace of mind when you’re purchasing from a business.
  • Paypal offers business loans.
  • You can buy or sell cryptocurrency with Paypal.

In comparing Venmo vs. Paypal, we used two full-membership accounts to examine the user interface, transaction process, features, fees, and balance transfers.

Ultimately, Venmo and Paypal do the same thing. They both get money out of your bank account or credit card and into someone else’s. The difference is that Paypal is a little bit more complicated to use, but offers many more features and services.

Venmo is best for someone who doesn’t want to deal with bells and whistles, and just wants a simple app to send someone some money as quickly and easily as possible.

The Best Caller ID Apps for Android and iOS

These days people don’t like to pick up calls from unknown numbers. You could do an online search to identify the caller. However, this is time-consuming and in most cases, you won’t get the person’s name or address.

That’s where a caller ID app is useful. Caller ID apps reveal the name of the caller even if they’re not saved in your contacts.

Best Caller ID Apps for Android and iPhone

Here are our favorite caller ID apps for Android and iPhone.

1. Truecaller (Android, iOS)

Truecaller can alert you to calls from both unknown numbers and numbers frequently used by phone scammers. The app also allows you to search for unknown numbers and block unwanted callers or text messages.

The free version of Truecaller is limited in its ability to identify unknown callers.

  • To use Truecaller, you’ll need to give it access to your phone book, phone call logs, contacts and text messages.
  • You’ll need to enter your phone number and set Truecaller as your default phone app for it to work effectively.
  • The app also has four different tabs: Personal, Important, Business and Spam, which make it easier for you to organize and find your text messages.
  • You can upgrade to Truecaller Premium or Gold to get notified when someone views your profile, view others’ profiles in Incognito Mode and to remove ads.
  • You can use the advanced blocking feature for stronger offline protection and auto-block spammers, a Premium badge on your profile and 30 contact requests per month.

While Truecaller is one of the best caller ID apps for Android and iPhone, it has a few downsides.

  • The app combines messages and calls in one page, which makes navigation confusing.
  • Truecaller is resource heavy and may drain your battery as it works in the background.
  • Truecaller works in the US and in many countries around the world. In the UAE, however, Truecaller is blocked due to violation of personal data laws and perceived invasion of privacy.

2. Hiya (Android, iOS)

Hiya is a reliable, fast and secure caller ID app.

  1. The app offers free spam alerts and blocks pesky robocalls for good.
  2. You get real-time context on who’s calling and automatic alerts that warn you about incoming spam calls.
  3. You can also stop “neighbor spoofing” calls from numbers that look similar to yours.
  4. If you get a call from an unsaved contact on your Android device or iPhone, the Hiya app allows you to reverse search the phone number and find out the caller’s name or whether it’s a likely robocaller.
  5. Like Truecaller, the Hiya app also requires access to your call log and access to make and manage calls so it can identify and block unwanted or spam calls.
  1.  For Hiya to work best, you also need to verify your phone number, and run it in the background while you’re not using it.The free version of the app offers basic caller ID, a personal block list, spam call alerts and basic number lookup. You can also choose whether you want your caller ID to be displayed on outgoing calls or not. A 7-day free trial is available so you can test and see if Hiya Premium works for you.
  2. You can upgrade to a Premium plan for $2.99 per month or $14.99 per year to unlock features like automatic spam blocking, premium caller ID, and premium number lookup. Hiya works in the US, Canada, India and more than 40 other countries.

3. True ID Caller Name (Android)

True ID Caller Name is one of the top caller ID apps for Android that lets you know your caller’s name and region so you can avoid spam and scam calls.

  1. The app has a simple and easy-to-use interface that displays your call history and an analytics page that shows the total number of incoming, outgoing, missed, and rejected calls.
  2. The free version limits you to identifying caller IDs, sending messages, and whitelisting numbers. Plus, it comes with annoying pop-up ads.
  3. For an ad-free experience, you can upgrade to the Premium version for $2 per month, and access features such as cloud backup for your messages, contacts, and call recordings. You also get access to the call blocker and location feature that helps you track or block phone numbers.

4. Mr. Number (Android, iOS)

Mr. Number is a free caller ID app that helps you identify callers quickly and easily through its expansive phone number database.

As its name suggests,

  1. Mr. Number not only offers a fast phone number lookup experience but also includes features to help you manage your contacts and calls that protect you from phone number scams.
  2. The app’s industry-leading spam detection technology works in the background to keep you free of robocalls. Plus, you can create a personal block list to avoid unwanted calls and get real-time alerts that warn you of incoming scam and spam calls, or configure the app to block unwanted calls automatically.
  3. For iPhone users, Mr. Number offers a callkit integration for call logs, incoming call screen, and call blocking support.

Identify Your Caller

Once you have the person’s identity, turn to our guide on the best search sites to find people online and get a total picture of who they are.

Mobile carriers also offer their own caller ID and blocking tools. For example, AT&T’s Call Protect, which provides a spam call blocking app, Verizon’s Call Filter that detects and filters out spam calls, and T-Mobile’s ScamShield that identifies and blocks scam calls. Do you have a favorite caller ID app for Android or iPhone? Tell us about it in the comments.

How to Add Music to Instagram Stories

Unlike most other social networks, Instagram isn’t heavy on text. It relies mostly on the photos and videos we post to get our messages across. These can be published as permanent photos or videos or as time-limited Instagram stories shared with friends and followers.

If you want to make your Instagram stories stand out a little more, however, you could customize them by adding music. Instagram has the rights agreements with many major music labels, allowing you to directly add snippets of popular music to your Instagram stories with no rights issues to fret over.

Here’s how to start adding music to your Instagram stories and make them more entertaining.

How to Add Music to Instagram Stories

Adding music to an Instagram story is a good way to create a more entertaining story for your followers. You can share the audio and also place visually impressive lyrics that scroll with your story so your followers can sing along.

This is all possible thanks to the agreements made between Facebook (Instagram’s owner) and major record labels. You can find music to add to stories by name or category via the Instagram app itself on Android, iPhone, or iPad devices.

This is only available for personal Instagram accounts. If you’re running a business account, the amount of licensed music available to you will be much more limited.

Creating a New Instagram Story

  1. To begin adding music to an Instagram story, open the Instagram app on your Android or Apple device and select the Your Story button on the top left. Or, select the Add icon on the top right, then choose the Story option from the carousel at the bottom.
  1. You’ll need to create or upload the content you wish to upload a story next. This could be a photo or video you’ve taken in the app itself or content you created elsewhere. Select Story in the carousel menu at the bottom, then select the Camera button to begin taking a photo (or select and hold it to take a video instead).
  1. If you wish to upload a video or photo to upload, select the Media icon in the bottom left, then select a suitable video or photo from your device’s camera roll.

Adding Music to an Instagram Story

  1. Once you’ve created or inserted content to share on your Instagram story, select the Stickers icon in the top right menu.
  1. In the Stickers search menu, select the Music option. If this isn’t immediately visible, use the search bar at the top to search for it.
  1. In the Music menu, you can search for appropriate music to add to your video. For instance, you could select one of the immediately suggested options in the For you tab or select Browse to look for music organized by category, music style, or mood. Alternatively, use the search bar at the top to search for a specific track or artist. Once you’ve found a song you wish to add to your story, select it to customize it further.

Customizing Instagram Story Music

  1. Music added to a video can last up to 15 seconds long. To change this period, select the audio length option in the bottom right. Choose a new duration (between 5 and 15 seconds in length) before selecting Done to confirm.
  1. To change the position of the snippet to a different point in the song, move the playback slider at the bottom of the menu to the left or right. Moving it left will move the audio snippet closer to the beginner of the song, while moving it right will move it closer to the end.
  1. Adding music to your story also involves adding auto-generated lyrics that appear, in sequence, as the music clip is played. To change how these lyrics are displayed, select an alternative style using the options provided at the bottom of the menu (directly above the playback slider).
  1.  If you want to remove lyrics entirely, select one of the artist labels at the end of the lyrics styles carousel instead.
  1. To change the color of the lyrics you insert (or the color of the inserted artist label), select the color switcher tool at the top of the menu. Selecting this will change the color—select it repeatedly to switch between different colors.
  1.  Once you’ve made the changes to your music, select Done in the top right.
  1.  This will add the lyrics carousel or artist label to your story for you to view and edit before you publish it. You can move it by selecting the lyrics carousel or artist label and moving it with your finger. If you want to change your settings, tap it to return to the Music menu.
  1.  Alternatively, drag the carousel or artist label towards the bottom of your screen and drop it onto the Remove icon. This will remove the music from your story.

Posting an Instagram Story with Music

  1.  Once you’ve added the music to your new story, you’ll need to publish it. Make additional changes to your story as required (such as adding text or other stickers), then select the Send to button in the bottom right.
  1.  If you want to only share your story with followers added to your selected close friends list, select the Share button next to the Close Friends option. To post the story for all of your followers or visitors to view, depending on your Instagram privacy settings, select the Share button next to the Your story option instead.

Viewing an Instagram Story with Music

  1.  View a published story (and hear the music you’ve added) by selecting the Your story icon in the main Instagram menu or by selecting your display picture in the profile menu.

How to Add External Music Sources to Instagram Stories

The method above shows how to add music to an Instagram story using Instagram’s own built-in music database. You can, however, add music to your Instagram stories using external sources, such as Spotify. You may want to do this if you want to add copyright-free music (or music you own the rights to) to your stories.

You’ll need the appropriate app (such as the Spotify app) installed on your device to do this, however.

  1. To add music to an Instagram story using Spotify, for instance, open the Spotify app and search for a song you wish to add. To add the song to your story, select the three-dots menu icon > Share in the playback menu.
  1. In the Share options, select the Instagram option.
  1. This will add the song and artist name, album cover, and other available media (such as song video) to your story. Select the Send to option to begin publishing your story, then choose Close Friends or Your story to make it available to friends or your wider list of followers.

Using Instagram Effectively

Once you know how to add music to Instagram stories, you can begin to create content for your followers that’s engaging and entertaining. If you want to repeat your success, you can repost your stories (as well as others) to share them even further, especially if you’re switching between multiple accounts.

While Instagram is focused on mobile users, there are desktop Instagram apps you can use to experiment with the platform on your PC or Mac. If you want to take your stories elsewhere, you might even think about downloading your content from Instagram, but if you’re having trouble, you can always delete your account instead.

Windows 10 & Windows 7 RAM Requirements – How Much Memory Do You Need?

Deciding on the specifications for your computer can be a challenge at the best of times, but RAM in particular is perhaps the trickiest. When it comes to RAM requirements in Windows 10 (or even Windows 7) there are a few things to keep in mind.

In this article, we’ll cover the minimum requirements, the max capacities for bother operating systems and give you our recommendations on how much RAM you should install based on your use-case.

Why Is RAM Important?

RAM is the working memory area of your computer. It’s much faster than a hard drive or even the latest SSDs. Before the CPU can access the data it needs to do its job, that data is loaded into RAM.

If you don’t have enough RAM, the computer is forced to write the overflow to your hard drive as a page file. This dramatically slows the entire system down.

The Minimum RAM Requirements for Windows 10 and Windows 7

Both Windows 10 and Windows 7 have minimum RAM requirements, namely, 1GB for the 32-bit versions and 2GB for the 64-bit versions.

However, running even “basic” applications such as Office or a web browser with more than a handful of tabs open will slow the system down with these minimum amounts of RAM.

Picking the Right RAM Amount for the Job

Consider the following when choosing how much RAM to put in a computer system:

  • Look at the minimum and recommended requirements for the software you want to run on it
  • Consider how often resource intensive applications will be used
  • Anticipate your system’s peak needs and not the average daily usage
  • Do not worry about unused RAM going to waste because Windows 10 uses extra RAM to preload data that the CPU is likely to need next, speeding up the whole system.

Maximum RAM Capacity

How much RAM can you actually use in your computer? The two factors that determine the maximum amount of RAM that your computer can support are the number of RAM slots on your motherboard and the operating system that’s installed.

For example, all 32-bit operating systems can use a maximum of at most 4GB of RAM, so installing more than 4GB of RAM in a system with a 32-bit operating system is pointless.

For 64-bit versions of Windows, the limits vary. Microsoft limits how much RAM various versions of Windows can use. For Windows 7, the maximum amount of RAM is as follows:

  • Windows 7 Home Basic – 8GB
  • Windows 7 Home Premium – 16GB
  • Windows 7 Professional – 192GB

Windows 10 is much more generous, letting Home 64-bit users address 128GB of RAM and Pro 64-bit users use an enormous 2TB of RAM!

RAM Speed and Channel Configuration

For a Windows 10 or Windows 7 machine, the speed of the RAM and its bandwidth are just as important as the amount of RAM installed.

Modern motherboards use a trick where RAM modules are given their own dedicated memory channels. For example, if there are two RAM modules installed (in the right paired slots) they’ll run in “dual channel mode”, which significantly increases bandwidth. It is better to have two 8GB modules in dual channel mode rather than a single 16GB module running in single channel mode.

This is a somewhat complicated topic, so you should read Does Faster RAM Matter? as well as Understanding Types Of RAM Memory if you’re interested.

Our Recommended RAM Amounts for Windows 10 and Windows 7

While plenty of factors are going to affect your individual needs, here are our general recommendations for Windows 10 and Windows 7 RAM requirements:

  • 4GB – We consider this the absolute minimum any modern computer running Windows 10 or Windows 7 should have. This is adequate for basic productivity in applications like Word and simple web browsing as long as you don’t open too many browser tabs simultaneously.
  • 8GB – This is the sweet spot for any general-purpose computer that isn’t being used for heavy duty applications such as video editing or video games. Office Suites and typical web browsing loads should work just fine and older video games that have 8GB as a recommended number are viable, assuming the rest of the system is up to it.
  • 16GB – This is a great option for users who perform advanced computing tasks such as mainstream video editing, playing the latest video games, or moderate multitasking with lots of browser windows and Office apps being used simultaneously.
  • 32GB – This is the new gold standard for gamers and resource-intensive tasks. If you’re editing very complex video projects, music productions, CAD 3D models, any complex 3D modelling or performing large dataset processing, this is where the fun starts.
  • 64GB and up – Now we’re solidly in the upper echelons of computer use cases. Workstations with many CPU cores and even multi-socket motherboards need this class of RAM allocation. Gamers won’t find much benefit here though. This RAM size is largely driven by the size of the assets that the CPU needs to process. So if you need this much RAM, you probably already know it.

These are our general recommendations, but don’t be afraid to make your own informed decisions. After all, money you save on RAM can be spent elsewhere in the system. Depending on what the computer is meant to do, that could be a better way to spend the available budget.

How to Hide an Order or Purchase on Amazon

Many people use the huge online retailer Amazon in order to shop online. It’s a hassle-free way to buy the things you want or need. If you shop on Amazon, you might not know that the site actually keeps track of what you’ve bought in the past. So, if you share an account with others, it’s possible for them to see what you’ve purchased.

If you find that you want to hide an order that you’ve made on Amazon, it’s not possible to delete anything completely but you are able to hide the purchase history so it’s not so easy to find. This can help keep your purchases private and give you some peace of mind that your history is safe.

How to Hide an Order on Amazon

Once you go on Amazon, make sure you are logged into your account first and the purchase you want to hide is associated with that account. Follow the steps below to hide your order.

  1. From the main screen, go to Account & Lists.
  1. Select Your Orders
  1. In the dropdown box, choose which time period you made the purchase you want to be hidden.
  1. In the bottom left-hand corner of the order you want to hide, you’ll find an option that says Archive Order. Click on this and in the pop up window select Archive Order.

The order will now be hidden from your purchase history, however it can still be found under Archived Orders in Your Account. There are more ways, however, that you can further hide purchase history to keep anyone from finding your order.

Use Amazon Household

If you have Amazon Prime, you can also use Amazon’s Household feature. This allows you to share Amazon Prime benefits with other members you add while still keeping accounts separate and private. You have the ability to add up to two adult accounts, four teen accounts, and four child accounts.

Adult accounts can keep their Amazon information private, but teen and child accounts cannot keep theirs private from the adult accounts. You can also choose to share only select digital content through Amazon with the teen and child accounts.

Amazon Household can give you some added privacy while still having shared Prime benefits throughout all family members. It also doesn’t cost any extra to set up a Household, so you don’t have to worry about price.

Hide Browsing History

Even if you archive your order, it will still be visible in your browsing history. This means if someone were to look at the browsing history of the account, the item will still show up there. Deleting this can help you to further hide any trace of your previous purchase. Here’s how to delete your browsing history.

  1. Go to Account & Lists and under Your Account click on Browsing History
  1. Find the item you want to delete, and select Remove From View in the bottom right corner.
  1. You can also click on Manage History at the top, and then select Remove all items from view

If you want to prevent your future browsing history being tracked, you can select to turn Browsing History on/off at the top of your browsing history page. This will stop Amazon from tracking searches you make and any items you click on. This can make hiding future orders much easier.

Also make sure you delete your internet browser history as the items you look at and what you’ve ordered could still show up here. The method will change depending on the browser you’re using, but generally you can go to your history in the options of your browser and there should be an option to clear your history up to a certain date. Or you can find a specific page and delete only that.

How to Hide an Order on the Amazon App

If you want to archive an order using your mobile phone, it will be a bit more difficult as you can’t archive orders on the Amazon app or on the mobile site. This means you’ll need to access the desktop site on your smartphone browser and go through the same steps for the desktop site as above.

On iPhone using Safari, you can tap on the site settings icon in the top left corner and choose Request Desktop Website. If you’re using Android with Chrome, you can tap on the menu options and check the box next to Desktop Site

This should give you access to the full Amazon site where you can archive order history as though you’re on a computer. So if you don’t have access to a desktop, you still have an option for hiding your Amazon order.

Although you can’t hide orders through the app, you still can manage your browsing history through it. Just go to Your Account page, which looks like a head, tap on Your Account, then scroll all the way down to find Browsing History

In the top-right corner, tap on Manage. Then you can select Remove all items from view to hide your history. You can turn your history on or off here as well.

Hiding Your Amazon Orders

Whether you want to hide your gift purchases within a shared family account or just want an extra layer of privacy, hiding your order on Amazon is pretty simple. Although there isn’t a way to necessarily delete your order completely, you can still do a good job of hiding it and making it hard to find.

If you follow all the tips here, your order history should be extremely safe. If you also turn off browsing history tracking, use Amazon Household, and archive your orders quickly, you should be able to keep your purchase history much safer in the future as well.

The 5 Best Anonymous File Sharing and Hosting Sites

It’s never been easier to send data to someone over the internet, but using a cloud service (or email) to send sensitive data might be a mistake. There’s always the chance that someone could intercept that data and in some cases this could lead to disaster. In many cases it may be better to hand over data to someone in-person using a secure storage method, but that’s often not possible.

The good news is that there are several anonymous file sharing websites that will let you send files to other people without needing any information about you or the recipient. They don’t care about your identity or what information you’re trying to send. These are some of the services we think is best for your budding cloak-and-dagger routine.

How Anonymous Is “Anonymous”?

It’s worth raising a point of caution before you start forwarding extremely sensitive documents to foreign intelligence operatives (or just your mother’s waffle recipe) with carefree abandon. Achieving true anonymity on the internet is actually a tall order. While the site might not ask for your name, it can pull all sorts of information about you without much effort:

  • Your IP address (and therefore your physical location).
  • What browser, operating system and computer you’re using.
  • Information about other sites you’ve visited.

That’s just for starters, so if you’re looking for next-level anonymity you can address these issues in a few ways:

  • Use a VPN to hide your IP address.
  • Use a Virtual Machine to hide your computer’s hardware details.
  • Use a secure browser (such as Brave or even Tor) on that virtual machine.

You should also apply your own encryption to a file before submitting it and then send the password to your recipient through another channel, such as Telegram or Signal.

1. WeTransfer (Up to 2GB for Free)

Pros:

  • Simple to use
  • Easy anonymous link sharing

Cons:

  • Only 2GB seems very low

WeTransfer offers two ways in which to send files. You can enter both your own and the recipients email address, or you can switch over to simply using a link. The first method can be anonymous if you use a disposable email account. You may want to do that in case you need to see a response. Otherwise the link method is inherently anonymous.

Obviously if you need to send more than 2GB in one go, you’ll need a paid account. That strips away any anonymity. However, don’t forget that you can use an application such as 7-Zip to both split and encrypt your files. Which can then be sent in chunks and reconstructed by the recipient.

2. SendGB (5GB Free or 1.99 Euro for 20GB)

Pros:

  • 20 GB of data sent anonymously is a phenomenal offer.

Cons:

  • 1.99 Euro isn’t much money, but it means more effort to stay anonymous.
  • Some might see the 7-day deletion policy as too brief.

SendGB’s main claim to fame is that it offers a massive maximum transfer size without you having to sign up and hand over any information. How big? File transfers up to 20GB, which is a record-setting amount as far as we’re aware.

The only catch is that you can’t send this amount of data for free. You’ll have to pay two Euros for the privilege. Except, how can you send something anonymously when you’ve just made an electronic payment?

SendGB doesn’t address this issue directly on their website. They don’t require any registration or information from you and use Stripe to process the payment. We assume that Stripe doesn’t pass private information on to SendGB, nor does PayPal which is the other payment method.

Nonetheless, if you want to take advantage of SendGB’s voluminous anonymous file sharing offering, we suggest you use a prepaid credit card or a virtual card instead of your primary credit card. Just to be safe.

SendGB will delete the data after seven days and then, presumably, it will be gone forever. However, don’t forget to encrypt sensitive information yourself just in case.

3. Uploadfiles.io (Ten Simultaneous 5GB Files Free)

Pros:

  • Up to 50GB of data sent for free.
  • 30 days of hosting.

Cons:

  • It can be a hassle to create 10 5GB chunks from your data if you’re pushing the limits of the service.

Uploadfiles.io doesn’t beat around the bush in any way whatsoever. When you type in the URL, you’re immediately met with a spot to drop your files. The free and anonymous offer here is for a whopping 50GB, but split into ten files of no more than 5GB each. That’s not a problem if you simply use a tool like 7-Zip to break your large set of data into suitable smaller chunks.

Guest users, who don’t have to log in or hand over any information, can have their data hosted for up to 30 days. This is quite generous, since other free anonymous file sharing sites will delete your data after a few days. Then again, it might take a very long time for your recipients to download the full complement of data, so it may even be necessary to have that much time.

4. Send Anywhere (10GB or Infinite Via Direct Transfer)

Pros:

  • Innovative direct file transfer solution with infinite file size.
  • Offers a Chrome extension.

Cons:

  • None really.

Send Anywhere (also branded as Sendy) is an interesting addition to this list because of the variety of ways that it allows you to send data to someone else. The most interesting of these is their direct real time transfer system. Basically, your data is never stored anywhere. The Send Anywhere server just acts as a go-between for the bits of data, immediately deleting them as they reach their destination.

The sender gets a six-digit code which the recipient enters at their end. Then the file transfer between the two devices happens in real time. In some ways this is the ultimate way to move data anonymously.

But there are hosting options as well, such as the link-sharing option. The direct method also has the advantage of having no size limited, whereas the link method can only handle 10GB of data.

5. FileDropper (5GB)

Pros:

  • Super, super basic and straightforward.

Cons:

  • It’s really basic. Maybe too basic for some users.

File Dropper calls itself the simplest file hosting website and that’s really not an understatement. This is the most bare-bones online file hosting tool we’ve seen.

All you can really do when visiting the site is click the “Upload File” button, upload the file and then share the link. It’s as simple as that and if you need nothing more than this site offers you’re going to be very happy.

Message in a Digital Bottle

We don’t know why you want to send data anonymously and really it should only be your business. Whether you’re a whistleblower trying to blow the lid on corruption or a medical professional sending confidential information to a patient, one of these excellent services may very well be just right for you.

3 Ways to Take a Photo or Video on a Chromebook

The camera on your Chromebook wasn’t designed for videoconferencing purposes only. You can use it to take photos, portrait selfies, and even record videos. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through different ways to take photos and videos on your Chromebook.

As a cherry on top, you’ll also learn some extra tips that’ll help you get the most out of your Chromebook’s camera. By the end of this article, we hope you’d have become a “Chromebook photography expert.”

1. Use the Default Camera App

Chromebooks ship with a camera application built into ChromeOS. Here’s how to use the app to take photos and videos on your Chromebook.

1. Tap the launcher icon at the bottom-left corner of the shelf.

2. Click the arrow-up button to open the ChromeOS Apps Viewer.

3. Tap or click the camera icon to launch the Camera app.

Pro Tip: You can quickly launch your Chromebook’s camera using Google Assistant. Uttering “Hey Google. Record a video” will open the camera app and take a picture or record a video respectively.

4. The Camera app is always in Photo mode by default, so click the shutter icon to take a picture.

To record a video, navigate to the Video tab and click the Record icon.

Photos you take in the Square tab will have a square dimension or aspect ratio. This is perfect for taking Instagram photos without having to worry about resizing or cropping.

Chromebook Camera App: Icons Explained

You’ll find some icons on the left sidebar when you open the Camera app on your Chromebook. Here’s what the icons mean and their functions:

1. Timer: This is the stopwatch icon at the bottom of the sidebar. Click this icon to capture photos with a 3-second delay after clicking the shutter icon. You can change the timer delay duration to 10 seconds in the camera menu.

2. Grid: Click the square icon that looks like a tic-tac-toe board to show gridlines in the camera windows. Gridlines help to straighten and level the subjects in your photos. Note that grids don’t appear in the resulting photos you capture.

3. Mirroring: This lets you change the horizontal orientation of a photo in real-time. Say you want to capture the image of a book but the texts on the book are in the opposite direction, click this icon to flip the photo preview from left to right, or vice versa.

4. Settings: You’ll find more camera configurations in the settings menu. Click the gear icon to modify the camera resolution, timer duration, and grid type.

5. QR Code: You can scan Quick Response (QR) codes on your Chromebook directly from the Camera app. Click the square maze-like icon at the top-right camera of the camera window and center the QR code in the code finder window.

The Camera app will display a link and a copy button when it detects a QR code.

6. Camera Switch: You’ll find a switch icon on the left sidebar if your Chromebook has two built-in cameras. This icon will also appear in the camera window if there’s an external camera connected to your Chromebook.

7. Microphone: There’s a microphone icon at the top-left corner of the Video window. Click the icon if you want to mute audio while recording.

8. Video Snapshot: The Snapshot button is the white circle above the Stop button. Click this button while recording to take a photo/snapshot of a scene in the video.

9. Pause: Click this icon to temporarily stop recording a video. Note that your Chromebook will save a paused video when you minimize the Camera app. However, closing the Camera app without stopping the recording will delete the video from your device.

2. Taking Photos in Tablet Mode

If you use a convertible Chromebook that folds into a tablet, or one with a detachable keyboard, you can take photos with the volume buttons. Launch the Camera app and press either the volume up or volume down button to take a photo.

Note that the volume buttons only work as a shutter when your Chromebook is in tablet mode. If you’re using your Chromebook as a laptop, the volume buttons will only increase or decrease the volume level.

3. Use Third-Party Apps

Although the stock camera app on ChromeOS produces decent image and video quality, there are some amazing camera apps that deliver the ultimate photography experience. Some of these third-party apps come with sport advanced camera features like background blur, unique stickers, high-end filters, etc.

Typically, many Android camera apps on the Playstore should work on Chromebook. We recommend that you try some of the apps in our best camera apps for Android compilation. They are compatible with ChromeOS and they all worked perfectly on our test Chromebook.

View Photos and Videos on Chromebook

There are several ways to view your photos and video on a Chromebook. We list some of them below.

From the Files App

On ChromeOS, photos and video recordings from the Camera app are saved in the system-generated Camera folder. Launch the Files app, go to My files > Camera and double-click or tap your pictures and videos to view them.

For Chromebooks running Chrome OS 76 or older, the Downloads folder is the default directory for photos and videos. So, if you don’t find a Camera folder in the Files app, delve into the Downloads folder.

Media files (photos, videos, GIFs, etc.) from third-party applications are saved in the Images directory.

By default, your Chromebook will open media files using the built-in Gallery app. To use another app, select or long-press the file and click the Open drop-down button on the menu bar. Afterward, select your preferred app.

To change the default media viewer, click Change default and choose the default app for viewing photo files.

You’ll need to repeat this step to change the default app for playing videos. Select a video file, click the Open drop-down button, select Change default, and choose your preferred app.

View Photos and Videos from the Camera App

This is pretty straightforward: Click the thumbnail of the most recent video or picture you captured. The image thumbnail sits right below the shutter icon.

That will open the built-in Gallery app. Click the left-facing arrow icon to view the previous photo/video, or the right-facing arrow icon to view the next item. To edit photos within the Gallery app. On the menu bar, click the icons to the right of the divider to add filters, crop, rotate, rescale, or annotate your photo.

The default video player has the basic controls you need. There’s a play/pause button, mute icon, volume slider, full screen mode, and picture-in-picture option—click the three-dot menu icon to access Picture in picture.

Take Photos, Create Memories

A Chromebook’s camera is usually not high-end, therefore don’t expect the photo and video quality to be as good as your smartphone’s. An external webcam could improve image and video quality when you take a photo or video on a Chromebook, so plug one into your Chromebook if you have any.

What Is a Google “Unusual Traffic” Error and How to Fix It

Google uses several techniques to prevent unnecessary traffic from abusing its search engine. One technique that can cause problems is the Google “unusual traffic” message that you might see, for instance, if you’ve performed too many searches in a short space of time. There are other reasons for this message to appear, however.

If this particular Google error is preventing you from using the Google search engine effectively, you can troubleshoot the issue by following the steps below.

What Causes a Google Unusual Traffic Error?

If you see a Google unusual traffic error message, it’s usually a sign that Google suspects your web traffic is problematic in some way. Unusual traffic, in this instance, typically means automated traffic or malicious traffic, caused by hackers, bots, malware unnecessary search requests.

It can also be caused by searches that mark you out as “unusual” in some way, such as regular or repeated use of advanced search operators.

It isn’t usually an error message you need to worry about, as it can usually be resolved with a few simple fixes. For instance, if you’re using a public computer, you may find that the internet connection (and outgoing IP address) you’re using is shared by too many devices, causing Google to limit the searches being made.

It can also be caused by a virtual private network (VPN), where web traffic routed through VPN servers causes Google to rate-limit the number of searches being made.

You may also need to check for possible malware. If your PC is infected, a hacker could be using your internet connection to send significant traffic to Google’s search engine, which Google will block with a “detected unusual traffic” message. If this occurs, you’ll need to scan for malware urgently.

The problem could also be down to an application or script you’re running yourself. If you’re trying to scrape Google search results too quickly, for instance, Google will block the searches after a short period of time.

Successfully Perform the CAPTCHA Test

If Google is blocking your search traffic without a good cause (as far as you’re aware), you can usually bypass it by performing the CAPTCHA test. CAPTCHA is a system designed to limit non-human web traffic (such as automated scraping bots) by introducing a test that “only” humans using a typical web browser can solve.

While the CAPTCHA system isn’t as foolproof as it used to be, Google still continues to use it as a way to limit unusual web traffic. If your Google searches are limited in some way, select the I’m not a robot checkbox in the CAPTCHA box and perform the test.

The test usually involves identifying images based on a set scenario by selecting them (for instance, picking all of the images with a visible tree). There is also an option for the visually impaired to hear the captcha read to them.

Once you’re chosen the correct images, selecting the Verify button should allow you to perform the search. However, if you fail the test, or if Google continues to suspect your traffic is automated, you’ll need to repeat the process.

If you continue to have issues, consider signing in with your Google account or switch to another web browser (such as Google Chrome). This is a good way to prove to Google’s servers that you’re a legitimate search user, reducing the likelihood that your searches will be rate limited in future.

Temporarily Limit Your Searches (and Use Fewer Search Operators)

If you’re making a lot of searches in a short space of time, especially if you’ve used an automated tool (such as a scraping bot) to make them, you may need to temporarily limit your searches.

You may need to do this for an hour or two, but it may take 24 hours for any rate limiting on your IP address to be lifted. You may also need to limit the number of advanced Google search operators that you’re using in searches.

This is because search operators (such as site:online-tech-tips.com) are an increasing sign of automated searches. Most Google search users don’t use operators for searches, so Google can easily filter these out for traffic. If you do need to use operators, use them sparingly to lower the chance of being rate limited.

Disconnect from a VPN (or Switch Internet Connections)

A virtual private network (or VPN) is often used to hide your true IP address, giving you extra privacy online. If you’re connected to a VPN, however, you may find that the chances of seeing a Google unusual traffic error message increase.

A VPN provider routes your traffic through thousands of servers at its disposal, but it also routes traffic from other VPN subscribers through the same servers. Much like using a public internet connection (such as a shared PC or public WiFi), this can cause a significant number of shared Google queries on the same IP address.

This will cause Google to block or limit the searches made through that IP address. Google may also identify certain IP ranges (such as those used by VPNs) as at-risk sources, rate-limiting them.

The best way to overcome these issues is to disconnect from any VPN connection you’re using to make searches. If this doesn’t work, you may need to consider switching to another internet connection (such as a mobile data connection) to bypass the issue.

Check for Malware

If you’re unsure as to the cause of a Google unusual traffic message, it could point to a malware infection on your PC or local network. This malware could use your internet connection to make a significant number of search queries to scrape data or otherwise perform a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Google itself.

While you could use third-party antivirus or anti-malware software, it isn’t strictly necessary. Windows 10 includes a built-in security solution called Microsoft Defender that you can use to check for (and remove) possible malware infections automatically.

  1. To open Microsoft Defender, right-click the Start menu and select the Settings option.
  1. In the Windows Settings menu, select Update & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security.
  1. Windows will open the Security menu in a new window. Select Virus & threat protection from the menu, then select Check for updates to make sure your antivirus database is up-to-date.
  1. Once the Microsoft Defender antivirus database is updated, select Scan options, listed underneath the Current threats category.
  1. Select the Microsoft Defender Offline Scan option, then select the Scan now button.

Windows will restart your PC, performing a boot-level scan of your system drive to check for any malware infection. Follow any additional on-screen instructions to remove any stubborn malware it detects.

You may need to repeat these steps on all other devices connected to your local network and sharing the same public IP address.

Using Google Effectively

A Google unusual traffic error message isn’t something to worry about, but if you’re seeing it regularly, you may need to rethink your search habits. Too many searches (or searches with advanced search operators) in a short period will cause it, but so can a malware infection, so be sure to check your network regularly for infections.

If you’re worried about the data Google is collecting on you, you might want to download your personal data to check. If you’re unhappy, you can always switch to a privacy-focused search engine like DuckDuckGo to keep your searches hidden or use certain browser tools to limit the amount of data you share online.

How to Create a Roll20 Campaign

Roll20 is an easy way to play DND with your friends regardless of geographic location. But the platform can be complicated and hard to understand. If you’re the Dungeon Master, you already have your work cut out for you organizing and running the game.

This guide will show you how to create a campaign in Roll20, tell you where to purchase additional content, how to invite players to your game, and much more. Also, be sure to check out our guide on how to use dynamic lighting in Roll20

How to Create a Roll20 Campaign

When you decide to host a game of your own, you can choose the world, the adventure, and much more. Playing as a Dungeon Master is just as rewarding as being a player

Here’s how to create your first campaign.

Log in to Roll20. On the welcome screen, you will see all your recent games—both those you’ve hosted and those you’ve played in.

Near the top of the screen, click Create New Game. You can make a new game simply by assigning it a name and a few identifying tags to help find them in searches later, but it’s better if you flesh out the information a bit more.

Under Name & Tags, enter the name of the campaign. If you aren’t sure what tags to use, try to think of the best words to describe your campaign. As you begin typing, the system will suggest tags.

Underneath Optional: Choose a Character Sheet, click the drop-down box. Roll20 supports numerous games besides DND, but for the sake of this example, choose D&D 5E by Roll20. A preview of the character sheet will appear when selected.

On the right side of the screen is the Optional: Choose a Module heading. Modules are games that have already been built and provide all the information you will need, including monster stats, maps, and much more. This is one way to select adventures you have already purchased.

If you want to keep this as budget-friendly as possible, choose one of the free modules to get a feel for the platform. If you have something else in mind, skip the modules and click I’m ready, Create Game!

How to Add Content

After you create the game, you will see its home screen. From here, you can choose to launch the game or add more content, invite players, and change specific settings. You can also create discussions around the game and schedule the next session.

The first time you launch the game, it will take longer to load while Roll20 adds all of the content to the platform. Subsequent launches will be faster.

Scroll down to and click the Game Addons header. This will show a drop-down box where you can add more content, as well as a list of all addons currently in your campaign. If you did not choose a module during game creation, you can select one here. Click the drop-down box and select the content you want, then click Add to Game.

It will take up to several minutes for the content to install, but once it does the page will refresh. When you launch the game, the newly-added content will be available.

You can also choose to change your in-game markers. Click the + symbol beside Token Marker Sets to add additional markers. If you do not have any, click Create New Set, give it a name, and upload the images you wish to use.

Token markers are icons used to denote status ailments and other important information during the game. The default set is helpful, but if you’re playing a custom campaign it can help to set your own tokens.

How to Invite Players

The most important element of any DND campaign are the players. You can’t have a game without them, no matter how much content you might have. Thankfully, inviting players is easy—and you will never have trouble finding someone to play with online.

To the right of the screen, click Invite Players. A pop-up appears where you can enter individual email addresses. It will show anyone that has received an invite and has not yet accepted. However, the easiest method is often to copy and paste the Share Link so anyone that clicks it can join your campaign.

Most campaigns are designed for four players, although you can have as many as you want. Above six players (not including yourself), the game begins to take a long time between turns, so be aware of how many people you invite to join.

Understanding Game Settings

Roll20 has an extensive settings menu. It would need a guide all its own, but there are a few settings you should be aware of. The first is whether or not to allow players to import characters.

If your campaign is a one-shot and you want to bring in higher-level characters from other adventures, you can choose to allow players to import existing characters from other adventures. This saves the trouble of creating all-new characters for an adventure that will only take a few hours.

The next setting you should change deals with movement.

Under Game Default Settings, scroll down until you find the Emits Light subheading. Click Has Sight and then Save Defaults. If you don’t do this, players will be able to see their assigned character tokens, but nothing else.

The final essential setting is under Compendium Settings. If you own the Roll20 version of the 5E Player’s Handbook or other resources, you can share them with players. This allows players to drag and drop spells onto their character sheet instead of manually entering the data.

It is a tremendous time saver, especially when new characters are needed. You can share your compendium with up to 10 players depending on your subscription.

Create Your First Campaign to Make Gameplay Easier

It’s complicated, but creating a campaign in Roll20 is the safest way to play DND right now. It’s also convenient, as you aren’t coordinating schedules throughout the day. While it lacks some of the charm of in-person gaming, it’s still a great way to catch up with friends and embark on exciting adventures.
