Discord Not Opening? 9 Ways to Fix

Discord is one of the most popular online chat services, especially for gamers. It uses VoIP and instant messaging to keep users connected to one another, and it will also let your friends know what you’re currently playing.

Discord is free to use, although there is an optional premium subscription that will provide users with animated avatars, emojis, and more. It’s also widely compatible across a large range of devices.

Sometimes, Discord may not be opening when you expect it to. If you boot Discord only to receive an error message, try these methods to fix the problem.

1. Update Discord to the Latest Version

Discord receives frequent updates to ensure no one can take advantage of exploits or bad code. Discord may not open if your version isn’t the latest version available. There are several easy fixes for this.

Update Discord to the latest version, and then set the app to automatically update whenever a new version comes available. Be aware, however, that some users note “update loops” in which the new installation file creates an issue and refuses to update the application.

2. Update Your OS

Whether you’re using Windows or macOS, Discord relies on you having the most recent version of your operating system. Keep your OS up to date to avoid any issues in launching applications. If Discord is not opening, make sure there are no necessary system updates and then try again.

3. Close All Other Programs

Some users report that Discord encounters errors if launched with other programs running in the background. Shut down resource-intensive applications like games, photo or video editing software, and particularly antivirus software before you launch Discord.

Some antivirus programs have been known to block Discord from starting, while games running in the background can also cause issues. Launch Discord first (or select for it to launch on startup) before you begin playing a game.

4. Clear App Data

One major issue that Discord users encounter is corrupted app data. To correct this, you need to clear and reset the related app data. To do this, first press Windows + R and then type %appdata% in the “Run” box. Press Enter.

In the window that opens, find Discord and right-click the folder and delete it. Repeat this process, but type %localappdata% instead. Find the Discord folder once again, right-click and delete it.

This clears both the server app data and the local app data. Once you’ve done this, try relaunching Discord.

5. Kill the Background Discord Task

Open Task Manager and look for Discord in the “Processes” tab. Right-click and select “End task.” Re-launch Discord after you’ve done this. Killing the process and restarting the app will often correct any problems that arise when initially launching Discord.

6. Change Date/Time Settings

Discord automatically checks for the date and time on your machine as part of its verification process. If your date and time don’t match what Discord receives from its servers, then the application often will not start.

Open your Date/Time settings and make sure you turn on Set time automatically. After you’ve done this, try to launch Discord again.

7. Flush the DNS Settings

Sometimes your internet settings can cause Discord to throw an error. If this happens, you can “flush” the settings and reset them. In many cases, this will correct the problem and allow Discord to boot normally.

Open the Windows command prompt. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + R and then entering cmd. After you’ve done this, type ipconfig/flushdns and press Enter. Finally, relaunch and check if Discord is still not opening.

8. Open Discord on Web

All versions of Discord sync with one another. If you cannot launch Discord from your desktop, there might be an issue with the information provided from other sources. An easy fix is to open Discord in your web browser and log in.

After you’ve logged into the web version of Discord, close your session and try launching the version from your desktop again. Users have reported this as a potential fix for Discord launch issues, but bear in mind that all evidence is anecdotal.

9. Uninstall and Reinstall Discord

If Discord is not opening, there may be a problem in the initial installation or in an update of the program. One of the easiest ways to correct this is to completely uninstall Discord and all related files.

Once you have uninstalled Discord, restart your PC. Navigate to Discord’s website and download the latest installation and setup file. Then re-install the program. This will fix any problems that arise from an earlier glitch in downloading or setting up the software.

How to Use Alexa as an Intercom

Amazon’s Alexa is packed to the brim with features and functionality that make it one of the best smart assistants on the market. One of its most powerful features is the ability to use it as an intercom.

There are several ways to use this feature. You can use Alexa as an intercom by making announcements from individual Echo devices, or broadcasting from all of them at once. This feature is already built-in, so you don’t have to set up an Alexa Skill or activate anything. Here’s how to use it.

Use Alexa as an Intercom With Drop In

Alexa has a unique feature that isn’t quite like calling. It’s called Drop In. With Drop In, you don’t have to wait for the person to answer: you just connect to the Echo. You can speak through its speakers and hear any activity near the device.

Given the potential security risks with a feature like this, you must first enable it before you can use the feature.

Open your Alexa app and tap Devices in the lower-right corner. Tap Echo & Alexa. This will display a list of all of your Echo devices. You have to enable Drop In on each device individually

This prevents the feature from operating on Echos that you do not want someone to drop in on, like in the bedroom. No one wants to be woken up by a strange voice.

Tap the device and scroll down to Communications. Tap Drop In. You can choose three settings: On, My Household, and Off.

Choosing On allows only permitted contacts to Drop In. If you choose My Household, only devices on your account can drop in (perfect for reaching someone on the other side of the house without making a call.) If you don’t want anyone to drop in, choose Off.

How to Drop In

You can drop in on an Echo device in two ways.

1. You can drop in on a specific device. The first and most common method is just to say, “Alexa, drop in on Kitchen Echo.” You can choose which device to connect to if you know the name.

2. You can also drop in on a specific group of devices. For example, if there are multiple Echo devices in the living room, you can say, “Alexa, drop in on Living Room.” Keep in mind that dropping in on a group of Echo devices can sometimes result in a lot of audio feedback, so you may only want to drop in on a specific device.

If you want to speak to the entire household, you can actually ask Alexa to “Drop in everywhere.” Any Echo device in your household that has Drop In enabled and is not set to “Do not disturb” will connect. Think of it like a conference call with the entire home.

When you want to end the connection, just say “Alexa, end drop in.”

You can also Drop In through your phone. Open the Alexa app and tap the Communicate tab at the bottom. At the top of the screen are four options: Call, Share, Drop In, and Announce

Tap Drop In. A list of compatible devices will appear. Tap one and you will connect.

If you connect to a device with a camera, like the Echo Show, your drop in will act like a video call. Otherwise it will be audio only, but you can turn off your microphone if you only want to listen. This is a useful way for parents to keep an ear on their kids while being in another room.

If you want to end the call, just tap the phone icon in the middle of your screen.

Warn Someone Before You Drop In

Drop Ins are a powerful feature, but best reserved for household contacts only. There are legitimate privacy concerns about someone potentially listening to you without your knowledge, as there is no warning for a drop in.

If you want to give someone a heads-up before you reach out, you can ask Alexa to call a specific device or tap the Call icon on your Alexa app. This will make the device ring before you connect.

How to Make an Announcement

If every room in your home is equipped with an Echo device and you need to bring everyone together for dinner, you don’t want to go through the trouble of making individual announcements. Instead, use Alexa as an intercom just for this purpose.

All you have to do is say, “Alexa, announce.” Alexa will then ask what you would like your message to say. You can record a message saying anything you want, ranging from “the meatloaf is ready” to “who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof.”

After you’ve finished recording, every device on your network will chime and broadcast your message. It’s a great way to reach everyone at the same time. Announcements are just one-way messages, however. Unlike the Drop In feature, announcement recipients cannot speak back.

You can also make an announcement through your phone. Navigate to the Communicate tab and then tap Announce. You can type your message or say something into the microphone and it will be played over all your Alexa devices.

A Hands Free Option to Instantly Connect

Alexa Drop In with announcements can spare you from a few trudges up and down the stairs. Pair them with Alexa skills and routines and you can even manage many family chores with it. Have you set up Alexa Drop In?

How to Sort or Filter by Color in Google Sheets

In 2020, Google added one of the most useful features to Google Sheets; the ability to sort or filter by color.

This is something users have been able to do in Microsoft Excel for some time. Having it available in Google Sheets means it’s even easier to migrate Excel sheets to an online spreadsheet.

If you’re wondering why you may ever want to sort or filter by color, consider the scenario where you’ve set up condition-based formatting. Sorting in this way lets you do things like sort alarms or rankings by category or priority rather than based on individual numbers.

Sort by Color in Google Sheets

Let’s look at a spreadsheet with a list of student grades that cover various ranges. In this spreadsheet we’ve configured condition-based formatting to assign the appropriate color code for each grade range.

With a sheet that’s formatted in this way, if you sort by column B you’ll see the grades sorted from A to B, but you won’t clearly see which blocks of grades make up each letter grade group.

The best way to do this is sorting by color.

To do this:

1. Select Data from the menu, select Filter views, then select Create new filter view

2. To sort the list with all of the “A” grades at the top, you can sort by Green. Select the filter icon at the top of the column, select Sort by color, select Fill Color, and then select the color you want to sort by. In this case, choose light green.

3. The color you select will be grouped and sorted at the top of the list.

You might notice that you can’t sort by all colors, and this makes sense, because colors have no order to sort by.

However, if you sort the column by numbers, the colors will also be organized according to their numeric ranges. The main point of sorting by color in Google Sheets is to quickly identify a single group of items in a large list according to cell formatting (which is usually based on conditional formatting).

Filter by Color in Google Sheets

Another approach to grouping items by their color is using the filtering feature. Google Sheets now lets you filter out all other colors except the one you’re interested in.

In larger lists, this is very useful for grouping all of the items you’re interested in while removing the clutter of all of the other data.

To do this, select the filter icon at the top of the column, select Filter by color, select Fill Color, and then select the color you want to filter by. In this case light green.

Once you’ve filtered by one color, you’ll see all rows where the column you’ve filtered is the color you selected displayed. All the other rows with other colors will be filtered out of the view.

This is a useful way to focus on groups of data, removing everything else that may get in the way of your analysis.

Sorting or filtering by color in Google Sheets is a less granular approach than sorting by numbers alone, but sometimes visualizing data in categories or groups like this is more valuable.

Sort by Text Color in Google Sheets

In the same way you can sort or filter cell colors in Google Sheets, you can do the same based on text color. This is useful for all of the reasons above, but you’ve created conditional formatting for text color rather than cell color.

To sort by text color:

1. Select Data from the menu, select Filter views, then select Create new filter view

2. To sort the list with all of the “A” grades at the top, you can sort by Green text. Select the filter icon at the top of the column, select Sort by color, select Text Color, and then select the color you want to sort by. In this case dark green.

3. The color you select will be grouped and sorted at the top of the list.

Just like will the fill sort, the text color you selected will group all items with that text color at the top of the list. All items underneath that group remain unsorted.

Again, it’s a good way to focus on specific groups or categories of data. But if you actually want to sort in numerical order you’ll need to sort by cell content (numbers) as you normally would.

Filter by Text Color in Google Sheets

You can also filter out those records that are other colors, leaving only the group that’s the color you want. Again, this is useful with very long lists where you want to filter out all of the other values that aren’t in the range or category you’re looking for.

To filter by text color:

1. Select Data from the menu, select Filter views, then select Create new filter view

2. To filter the list so only the “A” grades are listed at the top, you can filter by Green text. Select the filter icon at the top of the column, select Filter by color, select Text Color, and then select the color you want to sort by. In this case, choose dark green.

3. The color you select will be grouped and listed at the top without any other text colors displayed.

This is especially useful for very long lists where you need to filter out the “noise” (all the other data), so you can focus on only the data you care about.

Sort or Filter by Color in Google Sheets

Using the sort or filter function in Google Sheets based on color lets you group and organize data. It’s not like normally sorting or filtering because it doesn’t organize data by each row, but instead by blocks of rows. It’s a great way to categorize and organize information in blocks.

It has its uses if you use it properly whenever you have conditionally formatted data.

SurveyMonkey vs. Google Forms: Which Is Better?

When considering which online tool to use for building surveys and collecting responses, both SurveyMonkey and Google Forms have useful features. Both offer free and paid versions and similar methods for collaboration and collecting survey data..

There are, however, several important differences between the two. The complexity of the survey you want to build, as well as your budget and skills with design, determine which survey tool to choose.

How Much Do SurveyMonkey and Google Forms Cost?

While SurveyMonkey offers some functionality for free, if price is your main consideration, Google Forms is the clear winner. Like many Google applications, Google Forms offers all its features to users for free. You can build as many forms as you want with no cap on the number of responses you can receive, view, and save.

SurveyMonkey’s Basic Plan is free. Under this plan, you can create a survey with no more than ten elements including questions, images, and descriptive text. While there’s no limit to the number of responses you can collect, starting on January 1, 2021, you’ll only be able to see up to forty responses per survey.

Depending on when you created your SurveyMonkey account, you may currently be able to see up to 100 responses per survey with the Basic Plan, but that will decrease to forty in January 2021.

SurveyMonkey offers paid plans for both personal and business users. Personal plans range from $32/month to $99/month. Business plans start at $25/user/month with a minimum of three users.

If you can’t predict how many responses you’re going to get, you can always start off with the basic plan and upgrade to one of SurveyMonkey’s paid plans if needed.

Upgrading will allow you to view and save all of the responses. Surveys that have received responses in excess of your plan’s limit are indicated on the My Surveys page.

How Easy Is It to Get Started?

Google Forms beats SurveyMonkey when it comes to ease of getting started. Visit, and choose to start a new blank form or begin with a template in their Template gallery

Similarly, on SurveyMonkey you can create a new survey from scratch, copy a past survey, or Start from template

SurveyMonkey offers many more templates than Google Forms in a wider variety of categories including academic, business, customer feedback, education, and events, among others.

However, some of SurveyMonkey’s templates aren’t free, and you can’t filter templates by price, so you may find the perfect template only to discover that you have to pay for it.

If you don’t want to start from scratch, it’s worth exploring each platform’s templates before you decide which tool to use.

Which Has Better Features?

Common features such as the ability to require answers and reorder questions are available on both Google Forms and SurveyMonkey. Additionally, no matter which tool you choose, you can customize the appearance of your survey by uploading a logo and choosing colors and fonts.

Question Types

Google Forms and SurveyMonkey both offer an assortment of question types. On Google Forms, you can choose from: short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, file upload, linear scale, multiple choice grid, checkbox grid, a date picker, and a time picker.

SurveyMonkey offers the same question types as Google Forms plus others: a matrix/rating scale, ranking, multiple textboxes, and contact information.

Paying users of SurveyMonkey can also create click map questions and A/B Tests that randomly display different versions of a question, image, or text and allow you to specify what percentage of respondents will see each version.

Skip Logic

The degree to which you can control skip logic (sometimes called “branch logic” or “conditional logic”) may be the most important consideration when choosing between Google Forms and SurveyMonkey.

Skip logic is the process of sending respondents to different parts of the survey based on how they answer a particular question or after completing a section or page of questions.

Skip logic in Google Forms is simple and straightforward. For each possible response to a question, you can specify which section of the survey the respondent should be sent to next, or you can send the respondent straight to the end of the survey to submit the form.

Similarly, when respondents complete a section, you can either send them to another section or to the end of the survey.

Skip logic for specific questions is where SurveyMonkey shines, but you will need a paid account to access that feature. Depending on a respondent’s answer to a question, not only can you send them to a different page/section of the survey, you can send them to a specific question on that page.

As you would expect, when respondents complete a section of a survey on SurveyMonkey, you can send them to another section or to the end of the survey just like you can on Google Forms.

When it comes to granular control over your survey’s skip logic, SurveyMonkey has Google Forms beat.

Response Collection

Both tools offer similar response collectors. You can send your survey by email, embed it on a website, or share a link. SurveyMonkey offers a few other collectors like mobile SDK and kiosk survey, but, as you might have guessed, only to paid users.

Do you need other people to collaborate on the survey? Google Forms allows you to easily work with other editors. You can invite specific people to edit your form. You can also create a link that will work for anyone or a link that is restricted to only the editors you designate.

SurveyMonkey offers similar collaboration methods, but, once again, only to paid users. Users on the Basic Plan are restricted to sharing a preview link with other people who can then add comments to the survey.

What’s the Verdict: SurveyMonkey or Google Forms?

If your survey needs are complex and you don’t mind paying for the service, SurveyMonkey offers a feature-rich package that is likely to meet all your needs.

If you don’t mind a few limitations, go with Google Forms. Our video, How to Make a Survey: Using Google Forms, will walk you through everything you need to know. How to Go Live on TikTok

You’ll either love or hate the idea of livestreaming on social media, but you can’t deny that the future of video is tied to this format. Live streams are entertaining and thus extremely popular with the average social media audience.

You must have come across a few live streams and wondered if you could go live on TikTok as well. Here’s everything you need to know about going live on TikTok, as well as a few tips to make sure your first live stream is not a disaster.

What Do You Need to Go Live on TikTok?

TikTok Live is a service within the TIkTok app that allows users to interact with content creators on TikTok in real time. TikTok doesn’t give an option to go live to just any user and that’s a part of the appeal.

Before you try and start your livestream on TikTok, make sure you meet all the requirements below.

  • You must be at least 16 years old to use TikTok Live. Users over 18 can receive virtual gifts during a Live session. Gifts are in-app incentives that you can send and receive on TikTok. Users purchase virtual gifts to reward their favorite hosts and content creators.
  • As a host, you can then convert your gifts into Diamonds and exchange them for real money. However, the exchange rate is rather low. The minimum age for having an account on TikTok is 13.
  • You must follow TikTok’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
  • Unlike Instagram or Facebook, where the number of followers isn’t an issue, on TikTok you must have at least 1000 followers before you can go Live.

How to Go Live on TikTok

If you match the criteria from above, you can go Live on TikTok. To start your first livestream on TikTok right from your phone, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the TikTok app and log into your account.
  1. Locate the Plus icon at the bottom of your screen and select Tap to create a new video
  1. Swipe left until you see the option that says Live
  1. Like with any other TikTok video upload, you’ll have the option to add a title and apply filters before you begin.
  1. When you’re ready, select Go Live. Now you can start interacting with your followers in real time.

How to Troubleshoot TikTok Live

If you meet the TikTok Live criteria but still can’t locate the Live button on your account, you can troubleshoot it by contacting the TikTok Support. If you’re experiencing issues with going Live on TikTok, follow the steps below to fix them.

  1. Open the TikTok app and log into your account.
  1. Select Me at the lower-right corner of your screen to access your account page.
  1. Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the screen to open Settings and privacy
  1. Scroll down until you see Support and select Report a Problem
  1. Under Select a topic, select Live/Payment/Rewards.
  1. Select Hosting Live.
  1. On the next page, select I can’t start a live
  1. Under Is your problem resolved? select No > Still have problem to file a report.
  1. Describe the issues you’re having with TikTok Live in as much detail as you can and add any relevant screenshots to your report. Select Report to send it to TikTok Support team.

Wait for the Support team to review your report and get back to you with instructions on how to fix your problem.

Can You Go Live on TikTok With Your Desktop PC?

While you can use TikTok on your PC, it has limited functionality compared to the mobile app. You can access your account, browse videos using tags, keywords, and users that you follow, as well as upload videos to your account.

However, TikTok’s trying to encourage people to download and use their smartphone app, so many services including TikTok Live are unavailable through the desktop app.

Tips & Tricks for Getting Noticed on TikTok

If you’re a beginner on TikTok, the option to livestream on the platform might not be available to you. However, you can easily reach the 1000 followers target by applying the following tips for getting popular on TikTok.

1. Post Original Content Only

TikTok’s full of trendy content that popularity chasers are trying to imitate. It results in a ton of similar content on the app that quickly gets boring to browse through. The key to success here is to stand out and be yourself. Upload original content and find your own niche on TikTok.

2. Upload Content Consistently

Starting on TikTok is easy, but to grow on TikTok you must upload new content non-stop. Most successful TikTokers upload multiple videos a day, and that’s no easy task. However, if you want to see your followers increase, you have to commit and make it a rule to post daily on TikTok.

3. Allow Duets on TikTok

Duets are a popular format of content on TikTok. When you enable Duets, other users can use your videos to fill in dialogues, do sketches, or lip-sync together with you on the same screen. When someone posts a Duet, you’re tagged in it, which gives you a good opportunity to widen your reach and get new followers.

To enable Duets on your TikTok account, open TikTok and select Me to open your account page. Then open TikTok’s Settings and privacy menu and follow the path Privacy > Who can Duet with your videos > Everyone

You can set it to only allow your Friends on TikTok to Duet with your videos, but then you’ll be limited to TikTok users that you already connected with.

4. Follow TikTok Trends

One way to ensure your TikTok content’s popularity is to follow trends. That doesn’t mean you should copy ideas from the videos that are already going viral. Instead, you can post original content but use trendy music that everyone knows and loves.

5. Use the Right Equipment to Record Your Videos

The idea of using a good camera phone to record your videos might seem obvious, but that’s not all the equipment you need for a successful TikTok video. TikTok isn’t always about using professional expensive equipment. Their sole purpose is to create the right atmosphere and add a specific feeling to your TikTok content.

Even simple LED lights can work wonders. You can easily find these LED Strip Lights on Amazon. The retailers have started marketing them for TikTok since they’ve become so popular with TikTok users.

Start Live Streaming to Make Your Content Go Viral

Today you can go live on almost any social media platform. It’s a great format if you want to interact with your followers and receive feedback from them on the content you’re sharing.

Have you ever gone Live on TikTok or any other platform? What tips can you give to someone who’s looking to start their first live stream? Share your experience with live streaming in the comments below.

How to Make a Scatter Plot in Google Sheets

A scatter plot (also known as a scatter plot graph) is a useful tool for data analysts, helping to visually explore and analyze two different data sets. For instance, if you’re comparing the sales results across different sales teams, a scatter plot would allow you to see who was the best (or worst) performing, much like a line chart would.

While you could use Excel to make a scatter plot, another way you can do it is to use the freely-available Google Sheets to make a scatter plot instead. In this article, we’ll explain how to make a scatter plot in Google Sheets, including how to customize it once it’s created.

How to Make a Scatter Plot in Google Sheets

A scatter plot, as the name suggests, uses scattered dots across a chart to visualize two or more types of linked data. For instance, if you wanted to compare the sales and profits of a sales team, a scatter graph (showing the profit vs the sales revenue) would be perfect, showing the profit and revenue for each salesperson.

As long as you have two comparable data sets, it’s possible to create a scatter plot, and Google Sheets makes this easy with its chart creation tool.

  1. To create a scatter plot in Google Sheets, open a spreadsheet and select the cells containing your data. With the data selected, select Insert > Chart from the menu.
  1. This will open the Chart editor tool in the right-hand panel. Google Sheets will automatically attempt to determine what type of chart or graph it should use with the selected data. If Google Sheets hasn’t selected a scatter plot automatically, select it from the Chart type drop-down menu, listed under the Setup tab. If you’re unsure what each chart is, hover over it to list the name.
  1. The chart editor will use the selected cells to form the data range for the plot chart. If you want to change this, press the Select data range button (next to the Data range box). Alternatively, type the cell range into the Data range box manually.
  1. The inserted chart will immediately update to the new chart type. By default, a scatter plot will have X-axis data that ties the two forms of data together (eg. the names of a sales team). The series will show the two (or more) forms of data that you want to compare (eg. profit and revenue). To add additional series, select the Add Series box and choose one of the additional data sets.
  1. If you need to remove one of the series, select the hamburger menu icon, then select the Remove option.
  1. If you want Google Sheets to use the top row to create header titles, select the Use row 1 as headers checkbox. To use the first column as labels (shown alongside the X-axis), select the Use column A as labels checkbox. You can also switch rows and columns by selecting the Switch rows/columns checkbox.

Customizing a Scatter Plot

Like all charts and graphs in Google Sheets, the chart editor offers a number of additional customization options. This allows you to change labels, axis titles, colors, fonts, and more.

  1. To customize a scatter plot, make sure that the chart editor panel on the right-hand side is visible. If it isn’t, select the chart, then select the hamburger menu icon in the top-right. From the menu, select the Edit the chart option.
  1. In the Customize tab of the Chart editor menu, you can begin to make changes to your chart. To change the chart colors and fonts, select the Chart style category and select one of the options (eg. background colour) to make changes. Any changes you make will appear automatically.
  1. Under Chart and axis titles, you can change the displayed titles for the chart and chart axes. Select a title option from the Chart title drop-down menu, then insert the text you wish to use in the Title text box. You can then format the text (including font, formatting, and color) in the options below the box.
  1. By default, data points on a Google Sheets scatter plot are displayed as circles. To use a different shape (for instance, triangles or X marks), select the Series category, then choose a new shape from the Point shape drop-down menu. You can also select a new point size from the Point size drop-down menu.
  1. The legend allows you to identify what data sets the points on a scatter plot belong to. To change the font, formatting, color, and position of the legend, select the Legend category and make changes using the options provided.
  1. In the Horizontal axis and Vertical axis categories, you can change how the different axis labels are formatted. Select either category, then make changes to the font, font size, formatting, and color from the options provided. If you want to reverse the axis order (from left to right or right to left), select the Reverse axis order checkbox.
  1. To help make your scatter plot more visible, you can add gridlines and ticks. To do this, select the Gridlines and ticks category, then select either Horizontal axis or Vertical axis from the drop-down menu. With the Horizontal axis option selected, select the Major ticks checkbox to enable ticks on the horizontal axis, then make further changes to the settings (including position, length, color, and thickness) below it.
  1. With the Vertical axis option selected in the Gridlines and ticks menu, you can enable gridlines (both major and minor) and ticks for the vertical axis. Select the Major gridlines, Minor gridlines, Major ticks or Minor ticks checkboxes to enable these options, then make changes to the settings (including color, position, length, thickness, and color) below it.

Create Visual Spreadsheets

Now you know how to make a scatter plot in Google Sheets, you can also experiment with creating other Google Sheets graphs and charts for data analysis, from a line chart to a bar graph. If you’re struggling, there are Google Sheets templates you can use to get started, ready for you to fill with data and create your own charts around it.

Experienced Excel users can also convert spreadsheets to Google Sheets with ease, although some features (like Excel macros) won’t be supported. You can take things even further, using Google Sheets scripts to expand functionality and integrate spreadsheets with other Google and third-party services.

How to Whisper on Twitch

While streaming on Twitch is all about putting your face and skills in the public eye, there are times when you might want to play things close to the chest. For example, maybe your favorite streamer has accidentally left something with personal information within view of the camera.

The last thing you want to do is draw attention to it by blurting it out in a busy chat. What do you do? Whisper them. There are numerous ways to whisper a user on Twitch, but the good news is that all of them are easy.

How to Whisper a Twitch User in the Browser

Whispering to someone from the browser is a bit different than whispering to someone on mobile. Here’s how you can reach out—discreetly, of course.

Type /w @Username

The easiest way to whisper a user on Twitch is to simply type /w @username. This method opens a private chat window between you and the other user. Bear in mind that you will need to spell their username correctly or you will receive an error message.

If you have previously whispered someone on Twitch, typing the @ symbol will autocomplete the names of anyone you’ve spoken to. You can just click their name to whisper them, or you can choose to manually type out the rest of the name yourself.

Use Their Username

An easy method for whispering a user in the same chat is to click their username. This opens up an information panel that gives you the option to add the user as a friend, whisper to them, or even gift them a subscription. If you want to whisper the user, just select Whisper

Like typing /w, this method opens up a private chat window between you and the other user.

Use the Whisper Button

You can also select the Whisper button on your menu. At the top-right corner of your screen, just to the left of the “Get Bits” button, is an icon that looks like a chat window. Highlight it with your cursor and it will show Whispers. Press this button.

It brings up a list of people you have whispered in the past. If you want to whisper someone new, just type their username. If you don’t remember the entire name, that’s fine—just type what you can remember and you can scroll through a list of users with a matching name.

How to Whisper a Twitch User on Mobile

If you’re catching up on live streamed games on Twitch during a lunch break, you might want to send a quick message from your phone. Here’s how you can whisper a Twitch user from your mobile device.

Type /w @Username

Messaging someone from your mobile device works much the same way as messaging someone on the browser. Just type in /w @Username. Once you enter the first letter of the username, a list of potential matches will appear. Keep in mind that this method works only when someone is in the same channel as you.

Tap the Social Icon

At the top-right corner of the screen, beside the search button, is an icon that looks like a message bubble. This is the Social icon. Tap this icon to open a list of all whispered conversations you have received or sent in the past.

To whisper someone this way, tap Start a Whisper in the top-right corner. You can select a user from the list or search for a specific username. Tapping the username will open up a window where you can send a message or view previous messages.

How to Block Twitch Users

Like anywhere else on the Internet, Twitch has its fair share of users that you don’t want to speak to. Maybe it’s someone trying to stream snipe you, or maybe they’re salty that you beat them in Fall Guys. Whatever the reason, if someone is harassing you over chat, here’s how you can block them.

How to Block from Browser Whisper Window

When you whisper to someone from your browser, a smaller window appears beside the main chat window. At the top of this window is an icon that looks like a cog. Click that icon and then select Block @Username to prevent that person from sending any more whispers to you.

How to Block Someone From the Chat Window

Block a Twitch user if someone harasses you in a Twitch chat and you don’t want to whisper to them anymore.

Select their username. When the option pane appears, select the three dots to the right side. A secondary menu appears that gives you the option to block users. If they are particularly obnoxious, you can also report them.

Alternatively, you can open Settings > Security and Privacy and choose to Block Whispers From Strangers.

How to Block Someone on the Twitch Mobile App

If someone is bothering you through the mobile app, there are steps you can take.

Block From Username

If you tap someone’s username in the Twitch mobile app, it will open a second window. Near the bottom of the screen is the option to Block the user, as well as report that user.

Block From Whisper Window

If you are currently in conversation with someone or you have messaged them in the past, open the chat window and tap the cog in the top-right corner. At the bottom of the screen is the option to block a user.

You can also change your privacy settings through the Twitch mobile app.

Tap your icon in the top-left corner and choose Account Settings > Security & Privacy and then turn on the toggle for Block Whispers from Strangers.

Follow Social Etiquettes

Twitch is also about the community. That’s why you should always play by the rules of polite conversation even though Whisper is a private messaging system. Along with Twitch Emotes it’s a great way to build friendships on the platform.

Not Getting Gmail Notifications? 10 Ways to Fix

Gmail is quite possibly the most popular web-based mail app in the world. What’s not to like? Lots of space, a smart mailbox and great integration with the rest of Google’s suite of tools.

It’s a great service, until you stop getting notifications! If you’re not getting Gmail notifications like you used to, one of the tips below will most likely get you back into the loop quickly.

Update Your Desktop Browser

Since Gmail notifications on desktop systems are handled by your browser, it might be the culprit when it comes to not getting Gmail notifications. So the first thing you may want to try is checking for an update or hotfix.

Browser (or web app) updates sometimes break compatibility with some features. This is usually addressed pretty quickly in browser updates.

Use a Different Browser to Eliminate Chrome as a Suspect

Sometimes the reason notifications don’t work is because there’s something wrong with Chrome. Notifications should work with other Chromium-based browsers, including Opera, Brave Browser and Microsoft Edge.

Regardless which browser you’re not getting Gmail notifications in, try one of these other browsers for a while. If you start seeing Gmail notifications, then you’ll know the problem is only with the browser you were using originally. Try reinstalling or updating the browser.

Update or Reinstall the Gmail App

Sometimes things may go wrong with your Gmail app or its data. The fastest way to fix weird behavior in the Gmail app is to check for an update or to uninstall the app and then reinstall a fresh copy from the Play Store or App Store.

Update Your Phone or Computer

If an update or reinstallation of the Gmail app doesn’t work, check if there are any pending updates for your phone, tablet or computer. You should keep your devices up to date either way, so think of this as a good excuse to perform some overdue maintenance.

This may fix issues where your browser or app has been updated, but requires a new feature in the operating system that you haven’t updated to yet.

Double Check Desktop Notifications in Chrome

On desktop systems the basic first step in making sure you get notifications for Gmail is to check desktop notification settings in the browser. This applies to all later versions of Windows including 7,8.1 and 10. If your problem is specifically with native Windows 10 desktop notifications, move on to the next section.

For Gmail notifications specifically, here’s what to do in order to make sure they’re activated:

  1. Open Gmail
  2. Select Settings
  1. Select See all settings
  2. Scroll to the Desktop notification section

Under this section you have a few choices. By default these notifications are off, but you can switch them on in two different ways.

The first option is to turn notifications on for new messages. That seems straightforward enough, but Gmail uses an inbox category system. So, this option will only notify you about messages that arrive in the “Primary” mailbox.

Another option is to turn notifications on for mail marked as “Important”. This way you’ll only receive notifications when Gmail decides that a given message is important, or you set it as important with a Gmail filter.

Not Getting Gmail Notifications for Chrome Desktop in Windows

Windows 10 offers a unified action center where applications can send notifications. Normally, Gmail notifications will show up there so you can get an overview of which messages you’ve received. If for some reason you’re no longer getting Gmail notifications in the Windows 10 Action Center, here’s what to do:

  1. Open Chrome and type chrome://flags/#enable-native-notifications. Then press Enter.
  2. Next to Enable native notifications toggle the option on using the drop-down menu.
  1. Restart Chrome, you can use the Relaunch button that pops up.
  2. Next, select the Start button and then Settings.
  3. Select System and then Notifications & actions.
  1. Under the section labeled Get notifications from these senders, toggle the Google Chrome switch to the on position.
  2. Now, select the Google Chrome entry itself.
  1. On this page, you can customize the way that notifications from Chrome work. The most important setting here is “Show notifications in Action Center”. Make sure this is set to “On”.

If all goes well, you should now get Gmail notifications in your Action Center. Just be sure that you haven’t enabled Focus Assist. This Windows feature disables almost all alerts to allow you to work or play without interruption.

Check Global Notification Settings on Android and iOS

On both Android and iOS, you can change the global setting for how notifications should be handled. It may be that it’s not Gmail notifications in particular that are missing, but that the system-level notification settings aren’t right. For example, you might have all notifications disabled or accidentally activated your device’s “Do Not Disturb” mode in iOS or Android.

Make Sure Gmail Has Push Notification Permissions

Push notifications are a feature of most mobile operating systems and devices. Both Android and iOS manage push notifications on a per-app basis.

Regardless of which operating system you use, check under Settings > Notifications. Then look for the Gmail app’s section and make sure that it has permission to send push notifications.

Set Gmail as Your Default Mail Application

Whether you’re using iOS or Android, you can assign specific apps to be the default app for specific types of tasks, such as handling emails.

In iOS, go to Settings and then look for Gmail in the left hand pane. Under Gmail’s options, choose Default Mail App and ensure the blue check mark is next to Gmail.

The process in Android 10 is similar. Go to Settings > Apps. Then choose Gmail > Set as Default. Here you can check whether Gmail is set as the default application to perform certain actions.

Ensure the Gmail App Is Syncing

Another reason you may not be getting Gmail notifications is that you’re not getting any new mail on your device in the first place! Sometimes, for one reason or another, Gmail syncing is interrupted. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to check the syncing status and restart it if needed.

In iOS, open the Gmail app and select the menu. Then select Settings, choose your account and then Sync Settings. Now all you have to do is select how many days you want to sync.

In Android, open the Gmail app and select the menu. Then select Settings, choose your account and then make sure that Sync Gmail is selected.

Getting the Message Across

If all goes as planned, you should now have Gmail notifications back. If you’re still not getting Gmail notifications, there may be a more obscure cause for it. It might be time to get in touch with Google support.

That being said, narrowing down the source of the problem shouldn’t be too hard. If it’s specific to one device, it’s almost always going to be an app or operating system notification setting.

Differences Between a Video Game Reboot vs Remake vs Remaster

Old has become new again. Despite all the latest, powerful technology put into modern-day consoles and video games, many people want to return to simpler times. That’s why many companies are turning to some of the older, classic games to release for newer consoles.

When these games are produced, you may hear some different words used to describe them. Most of the time this is “reboot”, “remake”, or “remaster”. There are actually key differences between these, and knowing these differences can help you understand what the game will have to offer.

What Is a Reboot?

When a game is rebooted, designers take elements from a previous game series and essentially start it over again. There are usually big changes to characters, settings, or the overall story.

These are not typically sequels to previous games in a series, as reboots tend to completely change most aspects of the game in order to make it appeal to a new audience.

For example, the 2016 game Doom was a reboot of the 1993 FPS game. It completely updated the graphics, as well as adding more depth to the game’s storyline and gameplay elements.

A reboot, in comparison to other types of game reworkings, tends to change much more of the original game material. The entire concept of a game or game series is reimagined in a reboot.

What Is a Remake?

In a remake, game developers attempt to completely rebuild the game from its original form, updating it technically as well as making it more playable for a newer generation. The main concepts of the game, such as the characters, plotlines, and settings, all tend to stay the same within a remake. However, there may be new additions to gameplay elements, and changes to content such as items, enemies, combat, and more.

An example of a remake is Shadow of the Colossus, originally a Playstation 2 game, but remade for the Playstation 3 console. There were some changes from the original including a graphic update, a new control scheme, and better overall performance for the PS3.

What Is a Remaster?

The differences between remakes and remasters is very slight, but there is a difference. While a remake tends to focus on reworking the technical and performance aspects of a game, a remaster is generally made to look good on newer devices, and update the game to different resolutions like HD.

Some other things that can be technically improved, such as better sound, voice acting, and controls may also get an update. However, most parts of the actual gameplay stay the same.

An example of a remaster is the Spyro Reignited trilogy. These three games were completely graphically updated, and they recreated the levels similarly to the originals. Spyro’s lines as well as the entire soundtrack was re-recorded.

Other Similar Terms

There are some other words you may also hear when people talk about an older game getting released again. These can also tell you something about what types of changes may have been made to the original game.

These types of releases are simply games being reprogrammed in order to work on a different console. When a game is made to play on multiple consoles, each release is a different port for each console.

There are usually next to no changes between an original game and its ports, besides differences in controls depending on what console the game is played on.

These games are usually completely different from the main game or series, and aren’t really sequels. Spin-offs are most often games that take place in the same universe as a game series, yet with different characters and plotlines.

There are usually a lot of references to the main series of games that the spin-off is based on. These types of games are very prevalent with super popular game series, such as Pokemon. There are tons of Pokemon spin-off games, such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeons, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Ranger, and Pokemon GO.

This term is pretty straightforward. When a game is rereleased, it’s usually on the same console it was originally made for. Many game developers rerelease their most popular game titles with rebrandings such as “Greatest Hits” on the PS2 and PS3, “Nintendo Selects” for the Wii, WiiU, and 3DS, or Game of the Year editions of games.

These don’t usually have much difference from the original game, although sometimes new content may be added for this special edition of the game. Many times when these games go on sale, you can get some additional in-game content for buying it.

Are These Games Worth Buying?

Producing the same game again in order to reach more of an audience might seem a little gimmicky, but in most cases remastered, rebooted and remade games actually bring a lot of needed updates to these classics.

Some developers do a better job at rehashing their older games than others, so it really depends on the game itself. There are times when a remake or remaster is obviously done for a cash grab, with very little thought put into them. Reboots are different as they are usually wildly different from the source material, so a lot more work is put into them.

If your favorite classic game is facing a new, updated version, don’t be alarmed. Many game developers understand how important these games are to their fans and do their best to make them feel refreshing, as if you’re playing it again for the first time.
